Department of Justice to send election monitors to 3 Michigan cities

LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – The Department of Justice (DOJ) will send election monitors to three cities in Michigan to observe the Aug. 4 primary, the Detroit News reports.
The DOJ sent letters to Michigan officials mentioning plans to send election monitors to Detroit, Lansing and East Lansing. All three cities are Democratic strongholds.
The Detroit News reports it received a copy of the letter that was sent to Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope. The letter, sent by deputy chief of the Department of Justice Voting Section Timothy Mellett, says election monitors will be sent as part of an “assessment” of how Lansing administers the election.
The letter was dated June 23 and claims Lansing officials didn’t use the statewide voter registration list as the official registration list at polling places in the 2024 election. It also demanded officials provide the DOJ precinct lists and official training materials by July 22.
The letter also alleged that there were “long lines” at some voting locations.
Swope told the Detroit News the statement by the DOJ was false.
This is not the first time the Trump administration has targeted Michigan’s voting procedure, with the DOJ previously seeking access to personal information on Michigan voters.
